Not many know, but Zurich is actually the largest city in Switzerland by both land and population.
Because of its size, foreigners also commonly AND incorrectly assume the city to be the country’s capital.
We had the chance to visit some friends living near Zurich recently, and thought of highlighting this not so well-known tourist destination that is actually perfect for an extended and relaxing weekend getaway.
When you’re here, enjoy the charming views of Zurich Lake and nature treks at Rapperswil (a short train ride away), followed by a leisurely walk through Zurich’s historical neighbourhood.
The streets are intertwined with creeks, canals and gardens as well as colourful architecture, boutiques and cafés.
While you are here you might want to check out this lifestyle brand Soeder. All the brand’s clothes are made in Europe and its artisanal soaps are 100% made in their factory in Switzerland. They have unique fragrances grass roots, aromatic wood, necroni, and hinoki yuzu.
The last one I bought was the herbal garden one which reminded me of a basket of freshly herbs, harvested just before we started cooking.
We also enjoyed this delightful restaurant Neue Taverne that puts vegetables at the centre of its dishes, over meats/fish. It’s an explosion of flavours and you end your meal feeling satiated but not on the onset of food coma as we say in Singapore. 😏
The city is also famous for a dish that many enjoy daily but do not even know its origins.
Back in 1904, Swiss Doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner started a raw nutrition clinic serving meals made out of apples, oats, nuts, lemon and condensed milk.
You’ve guess it!
Zurich is also the birthplace of the “Bircher Müesli”, or simply “Muesli”!
